    Our History

generatelate, Jai rani province, Jalandhar, Punjab

The congregation of the sisters of the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament (SABS) has its origin in the personal experience of the Eucharistic presence of Venerable Mar Thomas Kurialacherry  (1873- 1925), an ardent devotee of the Holy Eucharist. The inner call received by him was that the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament must be known, loved and adored by all, always and everywhere. He pursued this inspiration with courage, stability and absolute trust and founded the Adoration Congregation on 8th December 1908. He shared this Charism with Mother Mary Francesca De Chantal, the co-foundress and   the first member of the congregation.

Our charism is devotion (Bhakthi) to the Holy Eucharist, which consists in a life of total surrender to the Lord. The core of this devotion is a deep personal attachment to Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. We foster the spirit of Eucharistic devotion in us and in others through the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Prime importance is given to the Eucharistic apostolate. To share the Eucharistic love with the brethren and thus to draw all to the table of the Eucharistic Lord, besides the Eucharistic apostolate, SABS extends their services in the fields of Education, Healing, Social Welfare and Missionary activities according to the needs of the time and place.

Our congregation was raised to the pontifical status by His Holiness Pope Paul- VI on February 11, 1968. The general curia of the congregation operates from Cenacle, Aluva, Kerala. Now Mother Grace Perumbanani SABS is the Superior General of the congregation.

    JAI RANI PROVINCE

To fulfill the missionary mandate of the congregation that’’ The Eucharistic Lord be known, loved and adored by all, always and everywhere’’we searched for new pasters. In the missionary expedition of the SABS Congregation, the missionaries of St. Mary’ s Province, Kothamangalam left the coast of Kerala for Orissa in 1971 and for Punjab in 1973.

We were welcomed to Punjab by his Excellency, Rt.Rev.Dr.Symphorian Keeprath, the Bishop of Jalandhar. We reached Ludhiana on 16th December 1973. The interest and initiative of Rev.Fr.Dominic Perumpanani and  Late Rev.Mother Alacoque, then Provincial Superior is behind this arrival. Late mother Tersita, Sr.Infant Tresa, Sr.Aney Mamana and Sr.Jemma Pollolical were the Pioneers. The first mission station in Punjab was Ferozepur. After receiving the courtesy of CMC sisters there, for few days, sisters started staying in a class room of the school there for about  2 years and later shifted to the newly built convent at Canal Colony. They were entrusted with teaching in a Diocesan Hindi medium school and taking care of the free boarding for the boys there. Later on, this community is shifted to Phagwara in 1978 as per the adjustments made by the Diocese.

The saplings, our Province Planted in the soil of Orissa and Punjab had a marvelous growth in every field. Till the formation of the Jai Rani Region on 1st October 1986 the convents were under the direct administration of the Mother Province. The Superior General was Rev.Mother Delphina SABS and the Provincial Superior Mother Simbrose SABS. Late Sr. Jose Mary Mulanjananiyil was appointed as the first Regional Superior, Sr.Dennis Pukkat and Sr.Elizabeth Kallingakudiyil were her appointed councilors. After her term she went back to Kerala and Sr.Cicily Chollamadathil became the regional Superior from 1989. The first house of this Region began on 15th Aug. 1990 at Phillaur in a rented house. Later with the support and co-operation of Rev.Fr.Mathew Kokkandam the then Chaplain of our Convents at Phagwara and Jalandhar, we could find a place and built a convent and school there. Sr.Elizabeth Pattaparambil was appointed as the Regional Superior by Mother Georgena SABS, then Provincial Superior  on 24th April 1995. in 1995 we extended our missionary activities to  Simla Chandigarh  Diocese because of the generosity of Rt.Rev.Dr.Gilberrt Rego, the Bishop. We opened a house at Narwana on 2nd October 1995 and involved ourselves in social  work activities under the supervision of Rev.Fr.Amritraj IMS. We accept the invitation of Rt.Rev.Dr.Hippolitus Kunnumkal and contributed our service to Jammu Srinagar Diocese from1996 and began our stay at Kathua, working in the Diocesan School. His Excellency has given another golden chance to spread the love of the Eucharistic Lord through perpetual adoration in the Cathedral at Jammu.

Jai Rani Region Orrissa-Punjab is raised in to the status of a vice province in the general synaxis in 1998 and it was declared on 25th March1998. Mother Elizabeth Pattaparambil was elected as the Provincial Superior of the newly erected ‘Jai Rani Vice Province – Orissa-Punjab in the election synaxis  conducted from 21st – 23rd March  at our Delhi Convent in the presence of Rev.Mother Thecla SABS the Superior General and Provincial superior Mother Felcita SABS, Sr.Elizabeth Kallingakudiyil, Sr.Agasa and Sr.Dennis Pukkat were the Councilors. The election synaxis at Kommittelepetta Orissa, from   14th – 16th December 2000 elected Sr.Elizabeth Kallingakudiyil  as provincial superior and after 3 years she was elected for the second term. In 2003 Jai Rani Provonce Orissa-Punjab was bifurcated into Jai Rani Province Jalandhar and Deepti Provine Orissa. Our new Provincial House Aradhanan Bhavan Deepnagar Jalandhar Cantt. was started with its inauguration and blessing  on 25th April 2006 by Rev.Fr.Kurian C.Muttathupadam. Mother Ans Maria Ambat SABS was elected as the Provincial Superior on 12th Dec.2006 in the Provincil synaxis  held at Deep Nagar in the presence of Mother Gregory SABS, the general councilor and representative of the superior general Rev.Mother Stella Maris SABS. In 2012 Rev. Mother Elizabeth Pattaparambil was elected as the provincial superior.

Various fields of apostolic activities enable our sisters to share in the redemptive mission of the church. Devotion to the Blessed Sacrament being the focal point of our services to the fellow beings. Our Primary mission is Eucharistic Apostolate. Keeping in mind the vision of our founder, education remains as one of the significant areas of our apostolate, right from the beginning of the congregation.

There are 3 schools under the management of this Province and sisters are working in the Diocesan schools run by the diocese of Jalanadhar (5) Shimla Chandigarh(2) and Jammu Srinagar(3). Sisters are engaged in the healing ministry by serving in a hospital run by the Diocese of Jalandhar. We are also running 2 free boardings for catholic girls and we are involved in parish activities, family apostolate and other social services.

With the good news of Salvation, we go any part of the world to make the Eucharistic Jesus known to all the people by our presence and ministries.
